"Decades ago when I was in the first grade my teacher wrote on my report card that she thought I had talent in art and hoped my parents would encourage me. And they did. They made sure I always had art supplies and arranged private lessons when I was in high school. I majored in Art and Art History in college at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. I went to Kansas City Art Institute after my junior year majoring in Design. I later returned to UNL for a degree in Art Education. I taught middle school art through out the south for 28 years. After retiring from teaching in 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia, I returned to Omaha. I’ve been working at Anderson O’Brien Fine Art Gallery since my return. I’ve always collected things. Having lived in various places in the south from years. I loved to hunt for treasures. Visiting antiques malls antiques shows, and various shops, I collected vintage silver jewelry and large natural stone beads. After my return to Omaha I started making my “Statement” necklaces and “Bagettes”. The small bags are hand sewn and beaded using my vintage pins and buttons. Each are uniquely one of a kind." -Karen Hughes
