The leaf in this painting has lost most of its green chlorophyll as happens to leaves in the fall. Colors of red orange blue and violet are revealed that have always been there but covered by the life in the leaf. Centrally found in this composition of softly toned background and brightly illuminated ripe crabapples the leaf is deeply colored and variegated. So I ask what is the true color of this leaf. Much of what we see in the world is continually changing its appearance over time. I have tried to intimate this through the vigorous movement of the imagery surrounding the leaf.
