While I was painting the complex shapes and forms of the white Magnolia blossoms with their even more unusual shadows I was reminded of Plato’s allegory of people trapped in a cave and only able to see shadows of reality. Plato was trying to explain how we arrive at truth or our attempt to obtain knowledge. The shadows on white petals are projections of real object by sunlight. I could never invent as beautiful and intriguing forms as those. Yet they are true forms that are in the real world.
