•••Christina Narwicz••• Biography

Christina Narwicz bases much of her work on the natural world. Although often abstracted, the painter’s organic themes clearly reference botany, the Caribbean Islands, the constantly changing environment as well as her own garden. Narwicz has exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows. Her paintings have been featured in publications such as Metropolitan Home, Omaha Magazine, The Briar Cliff Review and The Omaha World Herald. Awarded Artist-in-Residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska, she has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mid-America Arts Alliance as well as three individual Artist Fellowship awards from the Nebraska Arts Council. She was also nominated for a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award. Narwicz earned her BFA from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics and currently lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

•••Christina Narwicz••• Statement

The natural world is a starting point for my work. This current body of work explores the known and unknown, everythingness and nothingness. We are part of the whole, one of many. Patterns, repetition and layering of color is a starting point that moves the work into a curious journey of painting. By abstracting organic patterns into a visual vocabulary, I seek to create greater awareness of the ephemeral nature of space and place. Through an intuitive process, I draw on personal and collective memories to go beyond the cognitive world and initiate a dialogue with the subconscious. As a result, my paintings take on a life of their own and can mean different things to different people. In this way, my work becomes a continuous exploration of how we can perceive reality and where our minds might take us.
